The Gift

It's hard to comprehend the gravity of a $400 million gift. However, the 10,000+ employees at my organization are today finding themselves needing to do just that. Thanks to a gift to Sioux Valley Health System, now called Sanford Health, from businessman and philanthropist Denny Sanford, our organization will be positioned as a national leader in research, education, and pediatric care. As Denny said in yesterday's historic announcement, "We want Sanford to be a Mayo for kids."

Inevitably you are going to have some naysayers, but this gift is not about knocking a few hundred dollars off everyone's hospital bill for a year or two. It's about finding a cure to a yet-to-be-identified disease, about spreading quality pediatric care across North America, and about improving the human condition for years to come through research and education....all in little tiny Sioux Falls, SD. Exciting does not begin to describe the future healthcare landscape in our community.

Thank you, Mr. Sanford.

Wow. What else can you say about the magnitude of such a gift.

Must have been something in the works for a while? A seamless name-change like that doesn't go without proper planning.
